This is what is happening with animation training in India. Numerous institutes provide a six-month or a 1-year diploma. The curriculum consists of imparting some information of modelling or character making, environment style like how to model a sofa, etc, and use of software program like 3D Max, Flash, Maya and Adobe Photoshop. It was at that time I opted to go to a foreign institute to learn what makes their curriculum special. At DigiPen Institute they offer a 4-year course in animation. For the very first two years, students are not given any computers. It takes only 3 months to teach software. The concentrate is on imparting skills like acting, dancing, sketching, clay modelling, understanding physical anatomy of living beings, and so on. As soon as an animator picks up all these skills, he/she would be able to produce movies, video games and considerably much more.
There is no dearth of talent in India. But we need the appropriate training to groom these individuals if we want to generate actual animators and not merely laptop or computer-operators. The responsibility lies in the hands of educational institutions to supply a holistic curriculum in the field of animation.
